Polyps contract when touched; can sting and kill tiny shrimp fry (E1).
Populations grow rapidly through budding (E1).

Common Causes

Introduced on live plants or with live food (E1).
Overfeeding supports the micro-organisms hydra feed on.
Warm, still water with abundant food favours rapid budding.

What to Check

Inspect plants before adding — hydra hitchhike on foliage.
Reduce feeding to shrink their food supply.
Check whether shrimp fry are being caught — heavy infestations prey on newborns.

What Not to Do

Do not use copper-based products in a shrimp tank unless confirmed safe for invertebrates.
Do not feed heavily while trying to reduce the population — overfeeding sustains them.
