High Nitrate

Algae driver and long-term fish health concern

Symptoms

Nitrate readings climb week over week if water changes are skipped.
Algae growth often increases alongside rising nitrate.
Fish show stress over time; sensitive species decline first (E1: long-term fish health concern).

Common Causes

Accumulation from the nitrogen cycle — nitrate is the end product, removed only by water changes or denitrification.
Overfeeding and high bioload produce more waste than the system exports.
Rarely used or undersized filtration for the bioload.

What to Check

Test nitrate before and after water changes to measure export effectiveness.
Review feeding amounts and frequency — overfeeding drives nitrate up.
Confirm water change schedule and volume.

What Not to Do

Do not rely on nitrate-removing additives as a substitute for water changes.
Do not make a single massive water change if nitrate is very high — reduce gradually.
