pH Crash

Rapid dangerous drop in aquarium pH

Symptoms

pH drops sharply within hours, far below the tank’s normal range.
Fish show stress and rapid breathing as pH falls.
Severe crashes can kill fish that previously looked healthy.

Common Causes

Low KH (carbonate hardness) — insufficient buffering lets pH fall freely.
High biological load producing acids faster than the buffer can neutralize.
Decaying organic matter (dead plants, excess food) acidifying the water.

What to Check

Test KH — a low-KH tank is at risk even when pH looks normal.
Monitor pH at the same time each day to catch the trend before a crash.
Review organic load: uneaten food, dead plant matter, overstocking.

What Not to Do

Do not correct a crash with strong pH-adjusting chemicals — swing risk is high.
Do not assume soft water is safe without checking its buffering capacity.
